Throttle Bodies

Hi
cleaning throttle bodies has been mentioned on several threads on the site. I bought my SP1 earlier this year and I have no idea when they were last cleaned.
How do I know if they need to be cleaned? Is it just a case over removing the airbox and taking a look? Also how hard is it to clean them? is it something best left to the professionals or can it be tackeled easily at home?
