Sp-1 Microns fitting

Postby Jayboy » Sun Nov 27, 2011 11:17 am

Has anyone got Microns on their SP-1? I just got a pair of low-level ones for mine and I'm having real grief getting them to fit properly.
The left hand one seems quite close to the swigarm, but bolts up fine, the right hand one though is being a real bitch. I can't get it to fit very well, as I can't get the link pipe to slip down over the exhaust system far enough...unless I was to not bother bolting it up under the footrest hanger.
I dunno if there is a small piece of the system missing or not?
Any input / pics would be appreciated...
Jay.

Ah, looking again today - I think I have sussed it, looks like the lower part of the hanger, where the bolt goes through to the exhaust, is bent outwards a bit. Makes me wonder if the rear one is slightly bent also, strangely didn't have any problems with the original though!
The joys of a used machine I guess.

Found the problem, my front hanger is bent where the bolt bracket comes down below the footpeg...! DOH!

Re-fitted my originals with a spacer until I can find a hanger.

(Run out of cash at the mo and selling Microns if I can - see for sale secrtion)

SP-1 ANYONE GOT MICRONS? - grief fitting! !

Postby Jayboy » Wed Dec 21, 2011 11:31 am

I took these off the other day and re-fitted the standard ones.

I cannot get my head around how the Microns fit so badly on the right hand side. It's as if the link pipe needs to be about 3/4 longer. I cannot understand how just the hanger bolt hole being bent outwards by about 8mm makes such a hige difference, as if I slide the pipe down on the the headers as much as I think they need to be, it actually ends up with the brakcet on the link pipe being about 10mm FORWARD of the hanger bolt hole!

DOES ANYONE HAVE MICRONS ON THEIRS? I'm wondering if the link pipe should bolt behind the hanger and not in front like the original ones do???

Or maybe my downpipes have been bent aswell? I don't know if it's been up the road maybe - it does have some crappy bar ends - but that is not evidence of a crash. I think a good strip down is on the cards, not easy in your garden / back yard in December!

Someone bloody help me! :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

I had to use a ratchet strap over my bike to fit my scorpions
Basically to haul the main pipe into the right position so both link pipes would fit.
Bear in mind though my bike was a rear end cat C ,so it may have been moved in the shunt ?

fitting exhausts and getting them level is a PITA. I found the best way is to fit everything loose and work backwards from the outlet ends keeping them level. I have found it necessary to have the links only just slipped over the headers on the right side so that the cans are at the same angle from behind. Then just wrap some thin stainless sheet around the joint making a colar and clamp with two clamps. I have also had to re drill the header lugs and use spacers to fit to the footrest brackets. Most important is to make sure your headers are fitted properly as they easily work loose and a small displacement in them will manifest into a larger problem further allong the system.
I have spent hours doing this, good luck  :angry-banghead:

Cheers guys, not just mine then - I shat myself a bit thinking she was twisted and all sorts, but the standard ones go back on FAIRLY easily - though if any damage was done by dropping etc - they may be the ones which were on there, but you never know, I declined a set of Arrow cans when I bought the bike, so I don;t know if the standard cans I have, were always on there if you get me.
I had the Microns on, with the link pipe barely covered and it was blowing - I was thinking an extra inch of sleeve would do the trick, but seems odd - likely the downpipes have shifted to an extent or been bent a bit resulting in it getting worse further back as you say..
I think I am gonna have to get the fairing off, tailpiece off and do it from front to back.
I have a bonus day off work between xmas and new year now, so I pray it's dry!
The Microns need re-packing anyway they're loud as fcuk, with presents to wrap and shopping still to do it's hard finding time, but I need to get out on it before the grit gets laid down and the white stuff comes!

another thing to consider is swinging arm clearance. The swinging arm is wider (sits out further) on the chain side so the link pipe needs to come out further to clear it, but then sweep back in to make the pipes look right from behind. On my old scorpions it still looked wrong from behind until i extended the opposite side out to match so using the stainless colar. Just twisting the link pipe on the header can alter the angle of the end can completely, and then when you think you've got it right and tighten everything up the tightening process throws it all off again. Its worth the effort though because uneven pipes on a bike look so wrong IMO. And i would leave the tail unit on whilst doing this so you can use the reg plate as a reference to measure and level.

Cheers, good point, with the originals back on, for now, I notice the right hand one from behind, sweeps inwards.
I think this weekend is gonna be when i sort it out, undertray swap first and I might whip the lowers off and attack the pipes, I may chicken out and just change the rear hangers for now though first.
