Oil change question.

Postby Jayboy » Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:24 pm

Guys, I'm going to be doing an oil change this coming weekend. I'm unsure how long and what type of oil is in there, so have formulated a plan to use some spare new bike oils as a flush, running the bike up to temperature, then carrying out an oil and filter change as normal.

Question is, would anyone advise against dumping the first lot of oil out without running the bike up first?
I thought of this as after being sat for a week, more of it will be in the sump and not around the engine.
I'd then run it up with the old oil filter untouched, get the oil warm, then dump it all again and use some nice new Castrol and a genuine filter.

Probably sounds overkill, but I hope to avoid the new oil going shitty and dark after 10 miles...

Sounds like a good plan.
Most of the oils would have drained into the sump just like you said. As the bikes been on the side stand I would just lean it over the other way for five minutes to get as much as possible from the journals and then drain it. Just giv it a lot longer to let the last of the crap trickle out of the sump. You might want to also take the oil filter off at this time cause quite a bit gets trapped in there too. You can always stick it back on again for your flush cycle if you want.

Cheers Pete, yeah, I think I will remove the filter and re-use for the flush, hadn't thought about that aswell. I will be moving the bike back and around the place to park it where I sat on the concrete to work so that will probably slosh some more oil out of the journals, but the flush should help, guess the oil cooler might hold some back when doing a normal change.

If you run your bike and let it get up to about 50-60d and drop the oil out then but don't put another oil in to plush it out. The inside of your motor will be discoloured so no point as the oil will still keep coming out discoloured.
Most of the time your oil will cOme out as a dark colour because that's what happens oil wham it gets very hot but it dont mean it's manky. When you drain the oil and you tilt the tray have a look at the colour of the oil left on the side when it settles again if your insides are clean then you should be still able to see the gold colour of the oil. And don't forget the filter.
I am a wepon of masive consumption it's not my fault it's how im programed to function.

Stupid bloomin coolant change issues meant I ran out of time and didn;t get around to this after all.
Another week the SP is sat under cover minus the fairings - still I'm not out on it in this weather / gritted roads.
