sp coils advice please guys

Postby phillcbx » Sun Jul 05, 2015 10:57 pm

Hi all,
can anyone help me out please I have an sp2 2004 its been running rough at low revs and occasionally cuts out when pulling away form the lights, I have changed the ECU not that, I hardly use it due to the bad running, however decided to get her back on the road and got an mot on her it had the baffles in the scorpion cans and the power commander 3 was connected up ran ok but still stuttered on low revs.
Anyway I took the baffles out of the cans and disconnected the PC 3 she didn't pull as well as you would expect but the bike was popping through the cans like I have never heard on a bike before this only happened when I closed the throttle off.

So im guessing that the popping is caused by unburnt gases ?
can anyone give me some ideas on how to fix this bike PLEASE.
I am just about to fit a complete set of throttle bodies which should eliminate the TPS and all injectors.
A friend has loaned me the silver box ignitor box I think and 2 coils these are of the earlier sp1 does anyone know if they are the same as the sp2 ones ?

Any other suggestions please let me know, I love the bike but its doing my head in.

Kind regards Phill UK

Did you just call me "friend"?

According to the parts fische the CDI unit is the same (silver box to you..... ;) )

CDI 30450-MCF-003 SPY/SP1/SP2

Rear Coils
30502-MCF-641 SPY
30502-MCF-E01 SP1
30502-MCF-D30 SP2

Front Coils
30501-MCF-641 SPY
30501-MCF-E01 SP1
------------------ SP2?

The parts list does not include a coil number for the SP2 so there`s your problem. They said that they softened the power delivery on the 2 over the 1......just seems they let it run on a single cylinder......

Start with the easy stuff first.
One of the most common mistakes is to jump into the worst case scenario.
Pull your plugs out. Is it just one plug or both?
Is it just the plugs? What condition are the HT caps in? are they dirty? Could they be tracking?
Is you Choke stuck on?
How old is your fuel?
do you need a bit of injector cleaner in your tank
Do you need some new fuel?
Is there a drain on the front plug recess like there is on a Firestorm which can get clogged up??

Give us a few hints to start with and see what we can come up with

Have you tried the fuel pressure regulator to see if that's causing your troubles

Hi Guys just thought I would do an update and see if anyone has any other idea's

Changed the rear coil and fitted a complete other Injection unit with all new injectors and TPS and the other sensor,
Took her out and all same but this time no popping so at least that's gone now,

next I shall fit new plugs and 2 new coils and swop over the fuel cut off relay............ fingers crossed again

I put baffles in mine for mot last year and when I removed them it was popping like mad when I shut the throttle, it turned out one of my exhaust gasket had blown out and was drawing air in on the over run, not sure if the increased back pressure from the baffles caused this. On the bad running I would check the fpr, easy check and a common fault I believe.

Hi All,
One of the best bang for buck, mod I have done is to upgrade the coils and plugs.
I wouldn't recommend stick coils at all as everything I have read on them doesn't suggest an improvement in a positive direction quite the reverse.
and the other thing is one has to butcher the plugs to make them fit.

I fitted a pair of DYNA 4000 DC9-4 DYNATEK BLUE IGNITION COILS 0.7 OHM and DENSO Race Plug IK31, the change was so great I had to remap the fuel loads.

http://www.dynatekuk.com/accessories_dyna_coils.html

All up under $300 AUD, coils were the cheapest out of the USA, HT leads and fittings out of UK and reused the OEM plug caps.

The hardest part is making the brackets and making it all fit on the bike.
