Re: Valve Clearances

Ok, all clearances checked. I need to replace all of them, but all by roughly the same amount so I guess everything is wearing evenly. Most of the shims I need are 185 and 195, but I need a 188 and a 192 shim as well, do these size shims exist? If not what would be the best size to go for?

Thanks

Hi Matt,
188 and 192 do exist and can be ordered from honda no problem, I think they are about £3.00 each

188 is actually 1.875 and 192 is 1.925 , they just round the size thats printed on the shim. :ugeek:

Can you get away with swapping some of the shims about so you don't have to buy as many?

I would go on the larger clearance side, So that as the valves recede into the head the clearances will still be good.

So if it is say .13 +/- 3, this gives you .10 to .16, so I would aim for .13 to .15 so they will stay in adjustment longer and not burn out.

Just keep a good note of what shim goes where and recheck after you change the shims as it is easy to make a mistake. Also make sure the valve timing is spot on as the cams will turn slightly as you tighten the caps down - check and double check

Assuming for the inlet valves,
If 194 gives you the base clearance, +/- .03mm then a 192 (1.925) will give you base clearance plus .015 so 192 gives you .145 just where you want to be, on the looser side of the tolerance.

55 quid for 8 shims! I wasn't expecting that! Ordered the two odd sized ones from honda and getting the rest from eBay, less than 30 quid in total.
