Oil

Postby paulb » Mon Jun 20, 2011 1:52 pm

Hi
I am not sure when the oil was last changed on my SP1, he said it was 2k miles before I bought it so I want to change it to be safe. So what oil do you recommend?

Cheers

My last service, the guys put Putoline 10/40 Fully Syntetic in. I'd heard horror stories about fully synth, that it causes clutch slip etc, but I've not had a single problem. And Putoline only make oil for bikes, so you'd like to think they know what they're doing...

I only use fully synth motorcycle oil. Normally Mobil 1 which I believe is a 20W-50 though I could be wrong. Either way, if Mobil 1 is good enough for Lewis Hamilton..it's good enough for the SP!
I used to use Castrol but I get a cheaper deal on Mobil 1 through work 8-)

I was expecting everyone to say full synth, so there are conflicting opinions here too, I thought when we are all talking about the same bike that there would be a unanimous agreement on the full/semi debate.

I've used both of these in my SP1 2000 model:

Fuchs Silkoline COMP4 10W-40

Putoline Sport 4 10W-40

All I will say is, I'm a bit funny when it comes to oil change schedules and I do mine way more than required. It never hurts to change the oil, accept the wallet! Get some good deals on ebay with the filter too.

I've steered clear of the fully synth stuff, the semi is suitable enough.

Always been a Fuchs Silkolene Man but now I'm using Rock Oil. I was recommended it buy a local chap who builds race engines. Personally I can't tell the difference but I'm a little past an oil change now and I haven't burnt any nor has the level gone down or changed colour much so it must be fairly reasonable. On the other hand, maybe he just gets a good deal on it and can make some better profit
Personally I don't think the make matters too much as long as you do regular changes. I do mine every 4k, I'd rather not wait until it's worn out or full of crap before it gets done.

My local shop stocks rock oil, so I think I'll give rock oil semi a go and see how it works out
